Chapter 9 - The Confession

I scrambled up, coughing violently, and grabbed his suppressed pistol from the floor. I aimed it directly at his chest as he groggily tried to sit up, blood pouring from his temple.
"Don't move," I gasped. "Don't you move a muscle."
Marcus laughed, a wet, wheezing sound. "Shoot me. Go ahead. You'll go to prison for murder, and Lily will be an orphan. You lose either way, David."
"No," a small voice echoed from the hallway.
We both turned. Lily stood there, illuminated by a flash of lightning. In her hands, she held my phone, the screen glowing bright green. It was an active FaceTime call.
Detective Vance’s face was on the screen, along with the blinking red dot of a screen recording.
"He's been on the line for ten minutes, Mark," I said, my voice steadying. "He heard you admit you came here to kill us. He heard you talk about adapting and taking what you want. The state police were dispatched the moment my power was cut."

Marcus's smug expression finally cracked. Pure, unfiltered panic replaced it. He looked at the phone, then at me, realizing he was completely trapped. His wealth couldn't buy his way out of an active, recorded home invasion and attempted murder.
Through the pouring rain outside, the faint, glorious sound of sirens began to howl through the trees.
