Chapter 3 - The System Fails

Two weeks later, the impossible happened. The justice system, with all its blind spots and loopholes, let a monster walk free.

Because of a corrupted chain of evidence, a sympathetic judge, and a high-priced legal team that ruthlessly assassinated Rachel’s character in the press, Marcus was granted bail. He walked out of the county jail in a tailored suit, adjusting his cuffs for the local news cameras, playing the part of the grieving, traumatized widower to absolute perfection.

I was watching the broadcast from a secure, undisclosed apartment I had rented under a fake name. Lily was sitting on the floor, drawing with crayons. When Marcus’s face flashed on the screen, she dropped her red crayon. It rolled across the floor, snapping in half. She began to hyperventilate, clutching her chest.

"Daddy, he's out," she wheezed. "He said if he ever got out, he'd finish the job."

I rushed to her, pulling her into a tight embrace, rocking her back and forth. "He will never touch you again. I swear on my life, Lily. He has to go through me."

But the chilling reality set in. We weren't safe. The police had a restraining order in place, but a piece of paper wouldn't stop a man who bagged his wife like trash. I realized then that playing by the rules was exactly what Marcus was counting on. If I wanted to protect my daughter, I had to become something else entirely.
