Chapter 10 - Dawn

Six months later, the sun felt entirely different. It was warm, golden, and pure.

Marcus Thorne, born Mark Thomas, was denied bail. Faced with the mountain of evidence, the audio recording, and the reopened Florida cases, his expensive lawyers abandoned him. He took a plea deal to avoid the death penalty—life in maximum security without the possibility of parole.

I stood on the porch of our new house—a real home this time, far away from the suburbs of my past. It was a Saturday morning.

The screen door banged open. Lily ran out, her backpack slung over one shoulder. The hollow look in her eyes was gone, replaced by a radiant, unyielding light. She had gained weight, her hair was brushed and shiny, and her laugh had finally returned to fill the kitchen. The therapy was working. We were working.

She bounded down the steps, turning back to look at me.

"Dad!" she yelled, a wide smile breaking across her face. "Are we going to the park or what?"

I smiled, stepping off the porch and walking toward her, leaving the shadows behind us for good.

"We can stay there as long as you want, Lily," I said. "We have all the time in the world."
