Chapter 1 - The Deep End

The wail of the sirens grew from a distant scream to an ear-piercing shriek, flashing red and blue lights violently painting the interior of my sedan. I held Lily’s trembling hand, her small fingers feeling like fragile bird bones against my calloused palm. Two patrol cars violently hopped the curb, tearing up the overgrown grass of Rachel’s front lawn. Four officers piled out, weapons drawn, their voices a synchronized roar commanding whoever was inside to step out.

I watched through the windshield, my heart hammering a brutal rhythm against my ribs. The front door of the house remained shut.

An officer approached my car, flashlight blinding me. I rolled down the window just enough to speak. "My daughter is in the back. She's hurt. The man inside—Marcus—he locked her in a dog cage in the backyard. And..." I swallowed the bile rising in my throat. "There are bags in the pool."

The officer’s face hardened. He radioed for paramedics and a tactical breach. Within minutes, the front door was kicked open. Shouts echoed from inside the house, followed by the sound of breaking glass and a heavy thud. When they finally dragged Marcus out, my blood ran cold.

He wasn't fighting. He wasn't screaming. He was wearing a perfectly pressed dress shirt, holding his hands behind his back in cuffs, and he looked directly at my car. He smiled. It wasn't a panicked smile; it was a cold, calculated smirk that promised this was far from over.

While paramedics swarmed my car, wrapping a shock blanket around Lily, the fire department’s dive team arrived. I stood on the periphery, holding Lily against my chest as we watched them drag the heavy, waterlogged black bags from the stagnant green pool. When the zipper of the first bag was pulled back, the lead diver turned away and vomited into the grass.

Rachel was in the bags.

Lily buried her face in my shoulder. She didn't see it, but I did. The nightmare hadn't just begun; it had already consumed this entire house.
