Chapter 6 - The Safehouse

They barely escaped through the underground delivery tunnels, the sound of gunfire echoing behind them.

Mason and the remaining loyal guards held the line at the restaurant, buying them precious time.

Adrian drove a bulletproof black SUV into the pouring Chicago rain, his hands gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white.

He did not take them back to the Lake Forest mansion, knowing it would be the first place Moretti would look.

He drove to an undisclosed safehouse in the abandoned industrial district.

It was a stark, minimalist penthouse hidden securely above a derelict warehouse.

Once they were inside, Adrian locked the heavy steel door and engaged the biometric security system.

He tossed his keys onto the granite counter and finally let out a ragged breath.

He turned to look at Sophie, his eyes scanning her frantically for any sign of injury.

She was shaking violently, her beautiful black dress soaked from the freezing rain.

“Are you hurt?” he demanded, rushing over to her and running his hands over her arms.

“I am fine,” she stammered, her teeth chattering.

“I have just never seen anything like that in my entire life.”

Adrian stepped back, running a trembling hand through his damp, ruined hair.

He suddenly looked older, exhausted by the endless cycle of violence he had inherited.

“I tried so hard to keep that dark part of my life away from you,” he said bitterly.

“I wanted you to see the legitimate businessman, not the monster my father created.”

Sophie stopped shaking as she looked at the man who had just risked his own life to pull her through a war zone.

She stepped closer to him, closing the distance he was trying to put between them.

“You are not a monster, Adrian.”

It was the very first time she had ever used his first name.

Adrian froze, his dark eyes snapping to her face in sheer surprise.

“I have done terrible, unforgivable things to maintain my power, Sophie,” he warned her softly.

“You do terrible things to protect the people who rely on you,” she countered quietly.

“You saved me from Evelyn's cruelty when everyone else just watched.”

“You gave me my dignity back when I thought it was gone forever.”

She reached up, her trembling fingers gently touching his rough, shadowed jawline.

Adrian closed his eyes at her touch, leaning heavily into the warmth of her palm.

“I brought you into this nightmare,” he whispered, his voice laced with profound guilt.

“And I am choosing to stay in it with you,” she replied without a single ounce of hesitation.

Adrian opened his eyes, and the iron restraint he had been showing for days finally snapped.

He pulled her fiercely into his arms, his mouth crashing down on hers with desperate hunger.

It was a possessive, overwhelming kiss that tasted of rain and adrenaline.
