Chapter 10 - The New Empire

Three months passed since the fire that destroyed the Moretti casino.

The massive limestone mansion in Lake Forest was no longer a place of quiet fear and strict hierarchy.

The morning sun streamed beautifully through the spotless windows, illuminating a house that finally felt like a real home.

The staff moved comfortably through the halls, smiling freely and chatting without fear of reprimand.

Evelyn Cross was currently serving her sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

The Moretti family was a distant memory, their remaining assets absorbed or dismantled.

Sophie sat comfortably in the grand executive office on the first floor of the mansion.

She was no longer holding a mop, wearing a baggy gray uniform, or trying to hide herself.

She was sitting behind a massive oak desk, wearing a stunningly tailored navy-blue suit that highlighted her curves.

She tapped her designer pen against a complex financial report, completely in her element.

As the newly appointed Head of Global Logistics for Vale International, she had already increased the company's shipping efficiency by forty percent.

The corporate executives who once ignored her existence now practically bowed respectfully when she walked into a boardroom.

She had finally stopped trying to shrink herself to make others comfortable.

She fully embraced her size, her incredible intelligence, and her newly acquired power.

The heavy office doors opened silently.

Adrian walked in, looking devastatingly handsome in a sharp charcoal suit.

He bypassed her desk entirely, walked up behind her leather chair, and leaned down to kiss her deeply.

“Good morning, Miss Carter,” he murmured against her lips, his voice rumbling in his chest.

“Good morning, Mr. Vale,” she smiled, leaning back happily into his warm embrace.

“I have a very complicated logistical problem I need you to solve,” Adrian said softly.

He pulled a small, elegant velvet box from his suit pocket and placed it on her desk.

Sophie’s breath hitched in her throat as she stared at the little black box.

Adrian opened it slowly, revealing a breathtaking diamond ring.

It was flanked by two deep blue sapphires, a beautiful tribute to his mother’s bracelet that had started their entire journey.

“I need to figure out exactly how to seamlessly merge your life with mine forever,” Adrian whispered, looking deeply into her eyes.

“Will you marry me, Sophie?”

“Will you stay by my side and help me rule this city the right way?”

Sophie looked at the brilliant ring, then up at the dangerous man who loved her so fiercely and completely.

She did not look away, and she did not try to hide.

“Yes,” she said firmly, her voice filled with unwavering confidence and immense love.

Adrian smiled brilliantly and slid the ring onto her trembling finger.

The terrified, plus-size maid who once cried in his kitchen was gone forever.

In her place stood the most powerful, brilliant, and deeply loved woman in Chicago.

And her reign alongside Adrian Vale was only just beginning.
