Chapter 2 - Shadows and Sanctuary

Adrian led Sophie away from the crowded ballroom, leaving the chaos behind them.

They bypassed the servant corridors entirely, moving into the restricted zones of the massive estate.

He guided her up the grand sweeping staircase to the third floor, a private wing where no staff was allowed without explicit permission.

Adrian opened double mahogany doors, revealing a guest suite that was larger and more luxurious than Sophie’s entire apartment.

“You will stay here until this is resolved,” Adrian said, gesturing to the sprawling room.

Sophie froze in the doorway, her fingers tightly gripping the edge of her ruined uniform.

“Mr. Vale, I cannot stay here,” she whispered, her anxiety threatening to choke her.

“I need to finish my shift, the silver in the dining room needs polishing before the evening.”

Adrian closed the door behind them, cutting off the rest of the world.

He said her name with a gentle firmness that forced her to stop talking.

“You are no longer a housekeeper in this mansion, Sophie.”

“You were targeted today because of my enemies, and because you work for me.”

“The Moretti family wanted to breach my docks, and they used your gentle nature as a weapon against my security.”

“Until I dismantle their entire organization, you are in grave danger if you leave these walls.”

Sophie looked down at her scuffed black work shoes, fighting the urge to cry again.

“I am just a maid, Mr. Vale, they will not care about me.”

Adrian stepped closer, crossing the vast physical and social distance between them.

He gently lifted her chin with his index finger, forcing her to look into his intense, dark eyes.

“You are not just a maid, and you never were.”

“You are the woman who bakes cupcakes for the security guards when they miss their children's birthdays.”

“You are the woman who fixed my torn suit jacket last month when you thought I was not paying attention.”

“I see everything that happens in my house, Sophie.”

“And I see you.”

Sophie’s heart hammered violently against her ribs.

She had spent her whole life trying to take up as little space as possible, hiding her curves and her intelligence behind a quiet demeanor.

Now, the most dangerous man in Chicago was looking at her as if she were the only person in the room.

“There are fresh clothes in the closet,” Adrian told her, his voice rough with suppressed emotion.

“Mason will bring you a new pair of glasses within the hour.”

“Rest now, because we have a lot to discuss when I return.”

He turned and left, locking the heavy doors from the outside to ensure she was perfectly safe.

Sophie walked slowly into the massive walk-in closet, expecting to find empty shelves.

Instead, it was filled with beautiful, high-end clothing in soft fabrics and rich colors.

Every single item was exactly her size, tailored to flatter a fuller figure rather than hide it.
