Chapter 9 - The Cornered Rats

The realization of total, inescapable ruin washed over Marcus’s face. He wasn't just broke; he was facing a mafia hit squad and federal prison.

Sylvia leaped from her chair, her face twisted in pure, venomous rage. She lunged across the table, grabbing the heavy wine bottle by the neck, aiming it directly at my head.

“You ruined everything!” she shrieked.

Before she could swing, a massive hand clamped down on her wrist.

Victor Sterling stepped out of the shadows of the living room, flanked by two massive, armed private security contractors. Victor smoothly wrenched the bottle from Sylvia’s grip and shoved her backward into her chair.

“Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,” Victor noted casually, adjusting his suit tie. “Add it to the charges.”

“Who the hell are you?!” Marcus screamed, backing away toward the kitchen.

“I am Clara and Eleanor’s legal counsel,” Victor said, his deep voice commanding the room. “And I highly suggest you remain exactly where you are, Marcus. The perimeter of this property is currently surrounded.”

Marcus’s eyes darted wildly, looking for an exit. He bolted toward the sliding glass patio doors, desperate to run.

He yanked the curtains back and froze.

Standing on the patio, illuminated by the backyard floodlights, were four uniformed police officers and a lead detective. The red and blue lights of their cruisers flashed silently through the trees in the front yard.

“It’s over, Marcus,” Eleanor said, her voice filled with a heartbreaking mixture of grief and absolute disgust. “You traded your family for a poker chip. Now, you’re going to pay the debt.”

The detective slid the glass door open and stepped inside, pulling his handcuffs from his belt. “Marcus Hale. Sylvia Hale. You are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, elder abuse, and federal wire fraud.”
