Chapter 12 - Sylvia's Betrayal

Ten minutes later, the detective walked into Sylvia’s interrogation room. She was sitting with perfect posture, completely silent, refusing to speak without her expensive lawyer.
The detective sat down and tossed Marcus’s signed, typed confession onto the table.
“Your son just rolled on you, Sylvia,” the detective said casually. “He claims the attempted murder, the forgery, and the poisoning were entirely your master plan. He says he was just a terrified bystander manipulated by his mother.”
Sylvia stared at the paper. Her eyes scanned the signature. The carefully constructed mask of the wealthy socialite shattered, revealing the absolute monster underneath.
Her face turned a mottled, furious red.
“That pathetic, weak little coward,” Sylvia hissed, her voice dripping with venom. “He couldn't even run a simple embezzlement without screwing it up. He owed the mob! He bought the keylogger to hack Clara’s computer! I only drugged the old bat because Marcus was too scared to do it himself!”
The detective smiled, pressing a button on the tape recorder. “So you admit to drugging Eleanor Hale?”
Sylvia realized her mistake, but she was too furious to care. If she was going down, she was going to drag Marcus into the abyss with her.
“I admit that Marcus explicitly planned to drown Clara in a boating 'accident' once the money was secured,” Sylvia spat, delivering a bombshell that made my blood freeze in the observation room.
“What?” the detective demanded.
“He took out a five-million-dollar life insurance policy on Clara two months ago,” Sylvia smiled viciously. “He was going to kill them both. Now, if you want the insurance documents, you’re going to offer me a plea deal.”

I stumbled backward, hitting the wall of the observation room. He wasn't just stealing from me. He was going to murder me.
Victor caught my arm, his eyes blazing with fury. “We’re upgrading the charges to double attempted murder in the first degree.”
