Chapter 16 - The Cyber Auditor

The next day, it was my turn.

I took the stand not just as a victim, but as an expert witness. The prosecutor set up a large digital projector in the courtroom.

“Clara, as a cybersecurity auditor, can you explain what we are looking at?” Miller asked, projecting the offshore LLC logs onto the screen.

“This is a digital ledger of Marcus Hale’s attempted wire fraud,” I explained clearly, addressing the jury directly. “He utilized a keylogger—a malicious software tool—to steal my encrypted passwords. He then attempted to route one point two million dollars from my company’s payroll reserves into an unregulated offshore account.”

I clicked a button on my laptop, bringing up the next slide.

“However, he was unaware that my network utilizes a multi-factor decoy protocol. When he initiated the transfer, my system flagged the anomaly, secured the funds in a locked federal escrow account, and fed his computer a cached image. He thought he stole a million dollars. In reality, he stole nothing.”

The jury watched, fascinated, as I systematically dismantled Marcus’s entire criminal plot using IP logs, timestamped video footage from the hidden cameras, and the audio recording from the air vent.

“And this audio recording,” Miller asked, playing the tape where Marcus and Sylvia laughed about Eleanor dying. “How did you obtain this?”

“I found the flash drive hidden in the guest room air vent, precisely where Eleanor told me it would be,” I answered.

“No further questions,” Miller said.

The defense didn't even attempt a cross-examination. I had laid out a flawless, impenetrable wall of digital and physical evidence. The trap I had set on the night I returned from Seattle had snapped shut, and Marcus and Sylvia were completely crushed beneath it.
