Chapter 5 - The Offshore Account
Victor’s office was a fortress of mahogany and legal intimidation. He was a ruthless litigator who treated corporate fraud like a blood sport.
“The asset freeze is active,” Victor said, sliding a thick file across his desk. “Your startup’s operational funds are safely in escrow. Now, let’s look at the offshore LLC Marcus tried to wire the money to.”
I opened my laptop and connected to Victor’s secure monitor. “Marcus used a proxy server in the Caymans to set up the shell company. He named it ‘Apex Holdings.’ But he made a fatal error. He linked the LLC’s recovery email to his personal iCloud account.”
I ran a decryption sequence I had built for banking clients. Within minutes, we bypassed the proxy and gained full access to the LLC’s transaction history.
Victor leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. “Look at the outgoing payment schedules. He wasn't planning to keep the money, Clara. He was planning to pay off debts.”
I clicked on the linked accounts. My stomach dropped. “He owes two point five million dollars to a private equity firm in Vegas. A firm that specializes in high-interest, unregulated gambling loans.”
“Marcus is a degenerate gambler,” Victor stated, the pieces falling into place. “He leveraged his grandmother’s estate to cover his initial losses. When that wasn't enough, he tried to drain your company. The Russian mob doesn't take 'IOU' for an answer.”
“He’s desperate,” I realized. “That’s why they’re rushing to kill Eleanor. If she dies, the estate transfers immediately, and he can liquidate her assets to save his own life.”
“We have the financial records, the forged signatures, and the motive,” Victor said, closing the file. “The toxicology report will give us attempted murder. How do you want to play this?”

I looked at the screen, staring at the digital footprints of a husband who was willing to murder his own family for a casino debt.
“I want them to think they won,” I said coldly. “I want them to pop the champagne. And then, I want to burn their entire world to the ground while they’re holding the glass.”
