Chapter 6 - The Breach

The attack came at exactly two in the morning.

I was startled awake by the deafening sound of an explosion rocking the foundation of the cabin above.

Mateo began to wail, sensing the violent shift in the atmosphere.

"Shh, baby, I have you," I hushed frantically, pressing his face against my chest to muffle his cries.

Above me, I heard the heavy, rapid thud of tactical boots tearing through the wooden floors.

Gunfire erupted, the booming sound of Dante’s shotgun answering the rapid spray of automatic weapons.

"Find the basement!" a voice shouted from upstairs, a voice that belonged to one of Marcus’s hired thugs.

My blood ran cold as heavy footsteps pounded down the basement stairs.

Dante roared in fury, and a sickening crunch echoed through the ceiling, followed by a heavy body hitting the floor.

But there were too many of them.

The heavy steel door of the panic room began to rattle as someone aggressively picked the lock.

I backed into the furthest corner of the room, raising the silver handgun exactly as Gabriel had shown me.

My hands were shaking violently, but my resolve was absolute steel.

I had lost one child to these monsters.

I would absolutely burn in hell before I let them take another.

The heavy door swung open, and a massive man in tactical gear stepped into the room, grinning wickedly.

"Found the prize," he chuckled, raising his rifle.

I didn't scream, and I didn't hesitate.

I pulled the trigger.

The recoil snapped my wrist back, but the bullet caught the man squarely in the chest, dropping him instantly to the concrete floor.
