Chapter 18 - The Syndicate War

Harper was right. The only way to ensure her safety wasn't to run; it was to solidify their power so absolutely that no one would ever dare challenge them again.
Over the next three months, Damian waged a quiet, methodical war. With Volkov dead, the Russian syndicate fractured. Damian didn't just take their territory; he absorbed their legitimate fronts, dismantled their illegal trafficking routes, and forced the remaining families in Chicago to sign a blood pact of loyalty.
Harper didn't sit on the sidelines. She utilized her role at Blackwood Enterprises to launder the transition, turning blood money into legitimate real estate investments, charitable foundations, and thriving businesses. She was a genius with numbers, finding loopholes and legal protections that even Damian’s high-priced lawyers had missed.
She wasn't just a mob boss’s girlfriend. She was his consigliere. His partner.
One evening, Damian and Harper sat in the penthouse study, reviewing the final acquisitions that would crown Damian the undisputed, unchallenged king of the Midwest.
“The docks are fully operational under the new LLC,” Harper said, highlighting a tablet screen. “And the remaining Volkov lieutenants have relocated to Miami, as requested.”
Damian smiled, leaning back in his leather chair. He looked healthier, less burdened by the constant paranoia of a multi-front war. “You’ve streamlined the empire in three months. I should have hired you a decade ago.”
“You couldn't afford me a decade ago,” Harper smirked, setting the tablet down.
Damian stood up, walking around the desk. He pulled her out of her chair and into his arms. “I can barely afford you now. You are demanding.”

“I’m worth it.”
“You are,” Damian agreed, his tone turning completely serious. He reached into his pocket.
