Chapter 1 - The Weight of Paper

“Do you have any idea who I am?” Damian Blackwood’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble that barely carried over the howling Chicago wind. It wasn’t a boast; it was a genuine question. Men had thrown themselves out of moving vehicles just to avoid answering to him.
Harper Quinn didn’t even blink. The slush soaked through her canvas sneakers, freezing her toes, but her posture remained as rigid as steel. “I don’t care if you’re the mayor of this city or the devil himself,” she said, her voice piercing the bitter cold. “I told you, I bleed for my survival. I don't beg for it. Take your charity and give it to someone who has the luxury of owing you a favor.”
She slapped the damp, million-dollar cashier’s check against the tinted glass of his passenger window. It stuck there, a piece of soggy paper that held more wealth than her entire bloodline had ever seen.
The closest bodyguard, a massive man with a scar bisecting his eyebrow, took a menacing step forward. “Boss, let me teach her some manners.”
Damian raised a single, gloved hand. The guard froze instantly, stepping back into the shadows. Damian’s dark eyes locked onto Harper’s pale, exhausted face. He saw the tremor in her jaw, the way she favored her bad knee, and the absolute, unadulterated fire burning in her gaze. She was terrified—he could smell it on her—but her pride was a heavier anchor than her fear.
“You’re making a mistake, Harper,” Damian said softly.
Harper’s eyes widened for a fraction of a second. He hadn't asked her name inside the diner. He already knew it.
“My only mistake was pouring you a second cup of tea,” she shot back. She turned on her heel, her thin cardigan offering zero protection against the blizzard, and began the brutal, limping walk back to the diner.
Damian watched her until she disappeared behind the frosted glass doors. He didn't reach for the check stuck to his window. He simply slid into the heated leather interior of his armored sedan.
“Marcus,” Damian said, his voice echoing in the quiet cabin.

“Yes, Mr. Blackwood?” the driver asked, eyeing his boss in the rearview mirror.
“I want a complete dossier on Harper Quinn by sunrise. Who she owes, who she loves, and what she fears. Find the crack in her armor.” Damian leaned back, a dark, unfamiliar thrill racing through his veins. “She thinks she can walk away from me. Let’s show her that in Chicago, all roads lead to Blackwood.”
