Chapter 12 - The Kidnapping

Three days later, cabin fever set in. Leo was bouncing off the walls of the penthouse, and Harper was desperate for fresh air. Damian had gone to a secure meeting with his capos to finalize the strike on Volkov’s headquarters.

Against the head of security’s advice, Harper convinced Marcus to drive her and Leo to a private, highly secure park owned by the Blackwood estate just outside the city. It was fenced, guarded, and supposedly impenetrable.

They were walking near the duck pond when the perimeter alarms blared.

“Miss Quinn, get down!” Marcus yelled, pulling his weapon as two black vans smashed through the iron gates of the park.

Heavily armed Russians poured out of the vehicles. Marcus fired, dropping two of them, but there were too many. A sniper round struck Marcus in the shoulder, dropping him to the grass.

Harper screamed, grabbing Leo and shoving him into a concrete drainage pipe hidden beneath a small bridge. “Stay here, Leo! Do not make a sound until Damian comes! Promise me!”

“Harper, no!” Leo cried, tears streaming down his face.

Harper ran in the opposite direction, drawing the Russians away from her brother’s hiding spot. She made it fifty yards before a massive man tackled her to the ground. She fought like a wildcat, biting, kicking, and scratching, but a heavy blow to the back of her head sent the world spinning into darkness.

The last thing she heard was a thick Russian accent. “Leave the kid. We have Blackwood’s woman. That’s all we need.”

They dragged her limp body into the van and sped away, leaving the secure park in ruins.
