Chapter 7 - Unlikely Friendships

Over the next few months, my life transformed in ways I never thought possible.
With Eleanor’s guidance and financial backing, I moved into a beautiful, accessible apartment in downtown Savannah.
The job at the coalition was demanding but incredibly fulfilling.
I spent my days organizing support groups, securing funding for medical treatments, and advocating for accessibility laws.
I stopped hiding my scars under long sleeves and heavy makeup.
Liam became one of my closest friends during this transition.
He had officially called off the wedding and severed all ties with my family.
He often stopped by my office to bring me coffee and check on my progress.
“You look amazing, Maya,” Liam said one Tuesday afternoon, dropping a latte on my desk.
“I feel amazing, Liam,” I smiled, adjusting my short-sleeved blouse.
“I heard through the grapevine that Chloe had to sell her luxury car to cover the wedding debts,” he mentioned casually.
My parents had refused to pay the cancellation fees for the venue and catering, leaving Chloe responsible for the massive bill.
“I wish her well, but I don't want to know,” I replied honestly.
I had completely detached myself from the toxic cycle of my family's drama.
I was finally the main character in my own story, and I refused to let them drag me back into the background.
Liam nodded in understanding, respecting my boundary.

We had built a solid, platonic bond forged in the fires of that disastrous wedding day.
