Chapter 6 - A New Proposition

I spent the next three days living in the guest suite of the Vance estate.

The media storm surrounding the "Runaway Groom and the Cruel Bride" showed no signs of slowing down.

Chloe had attempted to post a tearful apology video, claiming the stress of the wedding had made her act out of character.

The internet immediately tore her apart, dissecting her fake tears and lack of genuine remorse.

On the fourth morning, Eleanor invited me into her private study.

The walls were lined with leather-bound books and awards for her various philanthropic endeavors.

“Maya, I have spent the last few days making some phone calls,” Eleanor began, sitting behind her massive oak desk.

“I sit on the board of directors for the National Burn Survivor Coalition.”

I sat up a little straighter, my interest immediately piqued.

“We have been looking for a new director of public outreach for our southeastern branch,” she continued.

“Someone who truly understands the trauma, the recovery, and the resilience required to survive.”

She slid a thick folder across the desk toward me.

“I want you to take the job, Maya.”

I stared at the folder, completely overwhelmed by the offer.

“Eleanor, I don't have a college degree in public relations, I’ve been living in the shadows for years,” I stammered.

“You have twenty years of lived experience, and a grace that cannot be taught in a classroom,” she countered firmly.

“It comes with a generous salary, full medical benefits, and a housing stipend so you can get your own apartment.”

Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes, not tears of sorrow, but of profound gratitude.

She wasn't just offering me a job; she was offering me a brand new life.

“I accept,” I said, my voice trembling with sudden, overwhelming joy.
