Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Decade

The criminal trial was the biggest media circus the city had seen in decades.

News vans lined the streets, and protesters held signs demanding justice for Emma outside the courthouse.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Emma’s hand tightly.

The prosecutor played the security footage of the assault on a giant screen for the jury.

Even after seeing it a hundred times, it still made my blood run cold to watch that heavy wooden sign strike my daughter.

But this time, I didn't feel helpless.

Julian sat at the defense table, his head hung low, refusing to make eye contact with anyone in the room.

When Marcus took the stand to present the financial fraud evidence, the jury was visibly disgusted.

They saw exactly how a family of billionaires had plotted to ruin a child's life purely to hoard more wealth.

The defense’s closing arguments were weak, pathetic attempts to claim Julian was under extreme pressure.

The prosecutor’s final statement was a masterclass in righteous anger.

“Greed is a poison, and it drove this man to physically and legally attack a seven-year-old girl,” the prosecutor told the jury.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When they returned, the silence in the courtroom was incredibly tense.

“On the charge of felony child assault, we find the defendant, Julian Vance, guilty,” the foreperson read.

“On the charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, we find the defendant guilty.”

Julian collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his hands as his father wept openly in the back row.

The judge didn't waste any time.

She sentenced Julian to twelve years in a federal penitentiary, without the possibility of early parole.

I squeezed Emma’s hand, a warm tear of pure relief sliding down my cheek.

The nightmare was finally over.
