Chapter 5 - The Smear Campaign

The next morning, the Vance family struck back with the full force of their public relations machine.

I turned on the television to see a polished news anchor reading a statement released by Richard Vance.

They were trying to flip the narrative, claiming Julian was suffering from a severe mental health crisis brought on by stress.

Worse, they started attacking my character.

An anonymous source leaked false documents claiming I was deeply in debt and had staged the entire event to extort the Vance family.

They even posted photos of my modest apartment, calling it a "squalid environment" unfit for a child.

I felt a wave of panic as my phone rang; it was my manager at the accounting firm where I worked.

“Clara, I’m so sorry, but the board has decided to place you on unpaid leave until this scandal blows over,” my boss said nervously.

They were trying to starve me out, taking away my income so I couldn't afford to fight them.

I hung up the phone and fought back tears, feeling the crushing weight of their power.

Suddenly, there was a sharp knock at my front door.

I looked through the peephole and saw Marcus Sterling standing in the hallway, looking sharp in a tailored suit.

I opened the door, and he walked in, taking in the sight of my small but impeccably clean living room.

“They got me fired, Marcus,” I said, my voice shaking with frustration.

Marcus just smiled a dangerous, predatory smile.

“Good,” he said, pulling a thick folder from his briefcase.

“That just adds wrongful termination and tortious interference to our massive lawsuit.”

He opened the folder, revealing financial documents that made my eyes widen.

“I did some digging into why Julian was at that banquet, and why he chose to target your daughter specifically,” Marcus explained.

“It wasn't a random act of cruelty, Clara.”

I leaned in, my heart racing.

“Julian was trying to frame Emma to trigger a morality clause in a very specific, very hidden legal document,” Marcus said.

The mystery was far deeper than a simple assault; it was a conspiracy.
