Chapter 3 - The Hospital Room

The emergency room was cold, smelling sharply of antiseptic and fresh linens.

Emma sat bravely on the examination bed, holding a small teddy bear a nurse had given her.

Her beautiful face was pale, and the white bandage on her forehead was a stark reminder of the violence she had endured.

I sat beside her, gently stroking her hair, promising her that the bad man would never hurt her again.

The doctor confirmed she had a mild concussion, but she was going to be perfectly fine.

As I signed the discharge papers, my phone started buzzing relentlessly in my pocket.

I didn't recognize the number, but my gut told me it was Julian’s people.

I stepped into the hallway and answered, my voice cold and steady.

“This is Clara,” I said.

“Ms. Clara, this is Richard Vance, Julian’s father,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed through the speaker.

I felt a chill run down my spine, knowing Richard Vance was one of the most ruthless billionaires in the city.

“Your son assaulted my child, Mr. Vance,” I stated flatly.

“And he will pay for his actions, but I want to offer you a resolution that avoids a messy public spectacle,” Richard replied smoothly.

He was offering me money.

He was trying to buy my silence and erase his son's monstrous behavior with a checkbook.

“I am prepared to wire one million dollars into an account of your choosing tonight, provided you drop all charges,” Richard proposed.

I looked through the glass window of the hospital room, watching my innocent daughter wince as she touched her bandage.

A million dollars could change our lives, pay off my debts, and send Emma to any college she wanted.

But taking it meant letting a monster walk free to hurt someone else's child tomorrow.

“Keep your dirty money, Mr. Vance,” I whispered fiercely into the phone.

“I am going to see your son in a prison jumpsuit, and there isn't enough money in the world to stop me.”

I hung up the phone and blocked the number immediately.

The war had officially started, and I was ready to burn their empire to the ground.
