Chapter 7 - The Trial

Six months later, the trial of the year began. Emma was healing beautifully, though a faint, silvery scar remained on her cheek—a constant reminder of the monster in their bloodline.
Vanessa took the stand. Her lawyers had coached her well. She wept uncontrollably, claiming it was a momentary lapse in judgment, a tragic accident caused by exhaustion and a heavy pan slipping from her grasp. She begged the jury for mercy, painting herself as a loving aunt who made a terrible mistake.

It was a good performance. Almost too good. Rachel felt a knot of dread in her stomach. Would the jury buy it? Would a wealthy, pretty woman get away with a slap on the wrist?
Arthur leaned over to Rachel. "Don't worry. We have a rebuttal witness they never saw coming."
