Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Two years later.

The bell above the bakery door chimed. Rachel wiped her hands on her apron and smiled as her regular customers walked in. The smell of fresh cinnamon rolls and coffee filled the air. She had used the civil lawsuit settlement from her parents to open her dream bakery in a quiet, coastal town far away from the toxic elite circles of her past.

"Mommy!"

Rachel turned. Emma, now six years old, ran out from the back room, covered in flour and laughing brightly. The faint scar on her cheek was barely visible now, just a tiny mark on an otherwise vibrant, happy child.

"Look what I made!" Emma held up a slightly lopsided, heart-shaped cookie. "It's for you."

Rachel knelt down and pulled her daughter into a fierce, loving hug. She had completely cut off her parents; she hadn't spoken to them since the trial. She heard through the grapevine that they had moved out of the country in disgrace, and Vanessa was serving her time in a maximum-security facility.

They were ghosts now. Shadows of a past life.

Rachel kissed the top of Emma’s head, tasting flour and sugar. "It's beautiful, baby. It's the most beautiful thing in the world."

The skillet, the screams, the cold marble floors—they were gone. They had survived the fire, and in the ashes, they had finally built a home filled only with warmth.
