Chapter 3 - The Counter-Attack

Two days later, Emma woke up. Her small shoulder was heavily bandaged, and she couldn't open her left eye. When Rachel leaned in to kiss her, Emma flinched, whispering, "I'm sorry I sat in the chair, Mommy." It broke Rachel’s heart into a million jagged pieces.

But the nightmare was just beginning.

That afternoon, a woman with a clipboard walked into Emma’s hospital room. "Rachel Vance? I’m from Child Protective Services. We received an anonymous tip that you are an unfit mother, and that you inflicted these injuries on your daughter to frame your sister."

Rachel felt the blood drain from her face. Vanessa was out on bail. The family’s high-powered lawyers were already spinning the narrative. They were going to try and take Emma away to force Rachel to drop the criminal case.
