The backlash was biblical. Eleanor and Richard’s friends abandoned them. Their business partners pulled out of deals, refusing to be associated with people who let a four-year-old burn on their kitchen floor. Vanessa’s real estate firm fired her publicly.
But a cornered animal is the most dangerous.

Eleanor cornered Rachel in the hospital parking lot one evening, looking haggard and desperate. "You ruined us," she hissed, grabbing Rachel’s arm. "You destroyed this family!"
Rachel yanked her arm away. "No, Mom. I protected my family. You destroyed yours. If you ever approach me again, I’m filing a restraining order."
