Chapter 9 - The Video In the Courtroom

The large flat-screen monitor mounted on the courtroom wall flickered to life, displaying a crystal-clear, wide-angle view of the second-floor hallway of my estate. The timestamp in the corner read July 14, 14:15 PM—the exact afternoon my father had arrived.
The courtroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence as the audio track kicked in. The sound of my voice, raw and terrified, echoed through the speakers: “Julian, please! I’m bleeding! I need to call Dr. Aris!”
On the screen, Julian strode into the frame, his face twisted into a sneer that drew a collective gasp from the reporters in the gallery. He grabbed my wrists with vicious force, twisting my arm until I dropped my cell phone onto the hardwood floor. He then kicked the device under the hallway console table and shoved me backward against the wall with enough violence to make the camera housing vibrate.
“You’re not calling anyone, you hysterical bitch!” Julian’s recorded voice roared through the courtroom, completely destroying his polished gentleman persona. “You stay in this room until my mother gets here to give you your sedative! If you try to leave this house, I will tell the paramedics you tried to kill the baby and have you committed to the psych ward!”
I felt my father’s hand grip mine tightly beneath the table as the footage continued, showing Eleanor Vance arriving twenty minutes later, handing Julian a prescription bottle, and coldly watching as I wept on the floor, pleading for medical help.
When the video finally cut to black, the silence in the courtroom was absolute. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning unit and the ragged, panicked breathing of Julian Vance as he sank low into his chair, his face buried in his hands.
Judge Hicks sat frozen on the bench for a long moment, her jaw clenched so tightly her cheekbones stood out in sharp relief. When she finally turned her gaze toward Julian’s legal team, her eyes were burning with judicial fury.
“Mr. Bradley,” Judge Hicks said, her voice deceptively quiet. “Is that the 'decorated war hero' you just spent ten minutes eulogizing? Is that the man you claim is a victim of a woman’s delusion?”
Bradley stood up slowly, his face flushed red with professional embarrassment. He looked at Julian, then at the judge, and quietly closed his legal folder. “Your Honor... the defense has no further comment at this time.”
Judge Hicks picked up her pen and began signing the orders in front of her with aggressive, heavy strokes. “In my thirty years on this bench, I have rarely seen a more egregious, calculated, and terrifying display of domestic abuse and psychological manipulation,” she stated for the official record.

“I am granting the Emergency Protective Order for the maximum statutory period of five years. Lieutenant Commander Vance is ordered to stay five hundred yards away from the petitioner, her residence, and her place of employment at all times. Furthermore, upon the birth of the minor child, sole legal and physical custody is awarded immediately to the mother, Elena Vance. The respondent is denied all visitation rights pending the outcome of his criminal trials.”
She slammed her gavel down, staring directly at Julian as the bailiffs moved in to escort him back to military custody. “Take him out of my sight.”
