Chapter 7 - Unlocking the Trust

Eleanor spun around, her face draining of color as she took in the NCIS investigator and the burly security guards blocking her exit. She snatched her handbag off the bedside table, attempting to maintain her haughty posture as the guards stepped forward to escort her out.

“This isn’t over, Thomas!” she spat as they grabbed her by the elbows. “We have the best custody lawyers in New England on retainer! That boy carries the Vance bloodline, and we will not allow a mentally fragile woman to raise him!”

“Save your breath for your bail bondsman, Mrs. Vance,” the NCIS agent said dryly as the security team physically escorted the screaming woman down the hallway.

Once the room was clear, the agent introduced herself as Special Agent Torres. For the next two hours, with my father holding my hand, I gave a comprehensive, recorded forensic interview. I detailed every shove, every forced isolation, every canceled prenatal appointment, and the exact locations of the hidden cameras that had captured Julian’s crimes. When Agent Torres left the room, she carried a secure encrypted drive that would effectively end Julian’s military career forever.

By early afternoon, Dr. Aris signed my discharge papers, confirming that my ribs were stable enough for outpatient recovery. My father drove me directly from the hospital to the downtown law offices of Hale, Montgomery & Vance—the historic firm that managed my late mother’s estate.

We were escorted into a wood-paneled conference room where Arthur Hale, a seventy-year-old managing partner who had known me since I was a child, sat waiting with a stack of ledger files and financial statements. His face was grim as we took our seats at the mahogany table.

“Elena, your father called me at dawn to brief me on the situation,” Arthur said, his voice laced with genuine sorrow. “I am so deeply sorry that we didn’t catch on to what Julian was doing sooner. When he presented your signed power of attorney documents two years ago, claiming you were too ill to handle administrative tasks, we had no legal reason to suspect foul play.”

“I understand, Arthur,” I said quietly. “But I need to know the damage. What did he do with my mother’s money?”

Arthur slid a thick spreadsheet across the table. “Julian used his temporary fiduciary access to systematically drain the operational liquidity of your trust. Over the past twenty-four months, he initiated monthly wire transfers totaling nearly $400,000 to a private shell company registered in Delaware under the name Vance Holdings LLC.”

My father leaned forward, his brow furrowing. “What was he using the shell company for?”

“He was funneling your inheritance directly into his mother’s failing personal accounts to maintain her lifestyle, as well as paying off massive gambling debts he incurred at private card games in Boston,” Arthur revealed, tapping a finger on the ledger. “He was literally stealing your mother’s legacy to fund his own double life while keeping you trapped and penniless at the estate.”

“Can we recover the funds?” I asked, feeling a cold spark of anger ignite within me.

“We can do better than that,” Arthur said, his eyes flashing with legal ferocity. “Because he executed those wire transfers across state lines using fraudulent medical powers of attorney, it constitutes federal wire fraud and grand larceny. I have already drafted an emergency petition to freeze every bank account attached to Julian and Eleanor Vance. By tomorrow morning, they won’t be able to buy a cup of coffee without court approval.”
