Chapter 5 - The Base Commander's Call

“Jesus Christ,” Captain Sterling muttered, the weight of the revelation crashing down on him. “Thomas... I am profoundly sorry. I had no idea. Whenever Julian brought Elena to the command holiday parties, he always portrayed himself as a devoted, protective husband. He told the entire senior staff that she was struggling with prenatal depression and needed quiet seclusion.”
“He lied to your command, Marcus, just as he lied to everyone else,” my father stated firmly. “He used his status as a decorated officer to create a smoke screen while he abused my daughter behind closed doors. And right now, I need to know what steps the Navy is taking to ensure he doesn’t make bail and attempt to finish what he started.”
“You have my word as an officer and a gentleman, Thomas—he won’t get within a hundred miles of her,” Captain Sterling replied without hesitation. “I have already dispatched a Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) agent to the state police barracks. The moment the civilian magistrate sets his bail tomorrow morning, NCIS will execute a military hold and transfer him directly to the base brig under pretrial confinement.”
I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. The fear that Julian would use his family’s financial resources to post bail and reappear at the estate to terrorize me had been gnawing at the back of my mind all evening. Knowing that he would be locked behind the reinforced walls of a military prison gave me the psychological safety I desperately needed to heal.
“What about his clearance and his command responsibilities?” my father asked.
“Effective immediately, Lieutenant Commander Vance is stripped of his security clearance, suspended from all operational duties, and barred from accessing any base facilities other than the confinement wing,” Captain Sterling confirmed. “I am launching a command investigation concurrently with the NCIS probe. If these recordings show what you say they show, we will convene an Article 32 preliminary hearing for a General Court-Martial by the end of the month. We do not tolerate dishonor or violence in our ranks, Thomas. I will see him burned for this.”
“Send the NCIS lead investigator to my daughter’s hospital room tomorrow morning at ten hundred hours,” my father instructed. “She will be ready to give her formal video-recorded statement, and I will transfer the master copies of the surveillance footage directly to their chain of custody.”
“Understood. And Thomas? Please tell Elena that the entire command stands behind her. If she needs anything—medical support, relocation assistance, or base security—it will be provided immediately.”

After my father terminated the call, he sat back down beside my bed and took my uninjured hand in his. The lines of exhaustion were etched deeply around his eyes, but his grip was warm and reassuring. For the first time in four years, I wasn’t fighting a solitary war against a man who held all the cards. I had an army standing behind me.
Later that night, as the pain medication finally pulled me toward a much-needed sleep, my father remained vigilant in the chair beside me. I looked at the dark window reflecting the hospital room lights and realized that the frightened, trembling woman who had let her husband control her every breath was gone forever. In her place was a mother preparing to go to war for her child.
