Chapter 4 - The Hospital Room

The sterile scent of bleach and lavender antiseptic filled the emergency trauma bay at Newport Memorial Hospital. I lay on the elevated examination table, my left arm tethered to an IV line pumping fluids and pain management into my battered system. The rhythmic, rapid swish-swish-swish of the fetal Doppler monitor echoed through the small cubicle like the sweetest symphony ever composed—a steady 145 beats per minute. My son was safe. Despite the terror, the physical abuse, and the agonizing stress of the afternoon, his little heartbeat remained strong and resilient.

My father sat in the hard plastic chair beside the bed, his laptop open on his knees as he coordinated with his team back in Maryland. He hadn’t left my side for a single second since the ambulance departed the estate. Whenever a nurse or an attending physician entered the room, my father’s sharp eyes tracked their every movement, ensuring that I was treated with the utmost care and respect.

The curtain pulled back, revealing Dr. Aris, a kind-eyed maternal-fetal specialist with thirty years of experience. She held a thick clipboard containing the initial forensic medical report, and her expression was grave as she pulled up a stool to sit at my bedside.

“Elena, I’ve reviewed your x-rays and the ultrasound results,” Dr. Aris said gently, placing a warm hand over mine. “Your baby is doing remarkably well considering the trauma your body has endured. There is no sign of placental abruption, and fluid levels are normal. However, we are keeping you overnight for observation due to the hairline fracture in your seventh rib and the severe soft-tissue contusions around your abdomen.”

“Will the rib fracture heal before my due date?” I asked, my voice still raspy from dehydration and exhaustion.

“It will be uncomfortable, but yes, you should be significantly healed before you go into labor,” Dr. Aris assured me. She paused, her gaze shifting to my father before returning to me. “Elena, I also want you to know that as part of standard hospital protocol for domestic trauma, I have documented every single contusion, abrasion, and fingerprint impression with clinical photographs and detailed measurements. This medical file is now a certified legal document. No one will ever be able to say you faked or exaggerated these injuries.”

A wave of profound relief washed over my chest. For half a year, Julian and Eleanor had systematically gaslighted me, convincing my former midwife that my chronic pain and bruising were the result of severe anemia and clumsiness. Now, the empirical truth was stamped into my permanent medical record by a respected specialist.

Just then, my father’s secured mobile phone began to vibrate on the bedside table. He glanced at the caller ID, his jaw tightening as he recognized the incoming number. He looked at me, his expression grim but resolute.

“Who is it?” I asked.

“It’s Captain Marcus Sterling,” my father said. “Julian’s commanding officer at Naval Station Newport. The base command has been officially notified of the arrest by the state police.”

My father stood up, walking toward the corner of the cubicle to accept the call. He pressed the speakerphone button so I could hear the conversation, wanting no more secrets or shadows in my life.

“Colonel Bennett speaking,” my father answered, using his formal service title.

“Thomas, this is Marcus Sterling,” a deep, authoritative voice crackled through the speaker, sounding deeply shaken. “I just received a priority notification from local law enforcement that Lieutenant Commander Vance was arrested at his residence on charges of felony domestic assault. Tell me there’s been some kind of terrible mistake. Julian is one of my top tactical analysts. He’s up for promotion next month.”

“There is no mistake, Captain,” my father replied, his tone chillingly formal. “I am currently sitting in the emergency room at Newport Memorial watching my daughter receive medical treatment for a fractured rib and multiple assault contusions inflicted by your officer. Furthermore, I am holding digital forensics proving that Vance engaged in systematic coercion, unlawful imprisonment, and medical neglect of a pregnant dependent.”

A heavy, dead silence stretched across the line for several seconds. When Captain Sterling finally spoke, the disbelief had completely vanished, replaced by the cold, hard steel of military justice.
