Chapter 1 - THE GHOST IN THE NURSERY

The final words of the poem hung in the heavy air like a restless ghost.

Julian stood completely frozen in the doorway of the nursery.

His heart hammered violently against his ribs, threatening to shatter his chest.

No one else in the entire world could possibly know those exact, secret words.

They were not published in any children's book.

They were not written down in any hidden diary.

They were the unique words his wife, Clara, had invented on a rainy Tuesday to soothe their terrified firstborn.

The woman in the red velvet gown, Victoria, immediately sensed the massive shift in the room.

Her perfectly manicured nails dug aggressively into Julian’s expensive suit jacket.

“Julian, do not listen to this insane woman for another second,” Victoria hissed, her voice laced with sudden panic.

“She probably found an old journal in the attic and memorized it to manipulate your daughters.”

Julian did not even look at his beautiful, wealthy fiancée.

He violently yanked his arm out of her desperate grip.

“Get your hands off me, Victoria,” Julian commanded, his voice cold and lethal.

Victoria stumbled backward, her mouth falling open in sheer, unadulterated shock.

Julian slowly dropped to his knees on the soft nursery rug.

He ignored the expensive fabric of his trousers as he crawled toward the weeping nanny.

The two little girls clung to the woman in the gray uniform, shielding her with their tiny bodies.

“Clara,” Julian whispered, the name tasting like ashes and honey on his tongue.

The nanny kept her face buried in her trembling, scarred hands.

She was violently sobbing, shaking her head as if denying her own existence.

“I am so sorry,” she wept, her voice fractured and broken.

“I just wanted to see my beautiful girls one last time before I disappeared forever.”

Julian reached out with trembling fingers and gently pulled her hands away from her face.

He stared deep into her bloodshot, terrified eyes.

Beneath the cheap makeup, the dyed brown hair, and the exhaustion, the undeniable truth was staring right back at him.

It was Clara.

The love of his life, the mother of his children, was alive in his house.
