Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Traitors

Lorenzo’s men flooded the room, cutting down Isabella’s mercenaries in a hail of bullets.

It was over in less than ten seconds.

The room fell deadly silent, save for the groans of the wounded.

Lorenzo walked slowly toward Isabella, who was bleeding on the concrete floor.

His face was completely devoid of emotion.

"Lorenzo, please," she begged, clutching her bleeding shoulder.

"We were supposed to rule this city together."

He stood over her, his shadow swallowing her pathetic form.

"You struck my woman, you threatened my adopted son, and you betrayed my family."

He raised his gun, aiming directly at her forehead.

"You don't get to rule."

He pulled the trigger without a second thought.

The echo of the gunshot signaled the end of the rebellion.

Lorenzo immediately dropped his weapon and ran toward me.

I fell into his chest, sobbing uncontrollably as the adrenaline left my body.

He wrapped his strong arms around me, burying his face in my hair.

"I've got you," he whispered repeatedly. "You are safe."

Leo woke up, rubbing his eyes at the noise.

"Mister Lorenzo, you came back," my son mumbled sleepily.

Lorenzo scooped the boy up with one arm, holding me tight with the other.

"I will always come back for you both," he promised.

The remaining syndicate leaders had been wiped out or had surrendered.

Palermo belonged entirely to Lorenzo now.

And for the first time in three years, I knew we were finally safe.
