Chapter 8 - The Siege

The hours ticked by like heavy stones in an hourglass.

Gunfire echoed in the distance, a brutal symphony of the mafia war tearing Palermo apart.

Leo slept on a makeshift bed of tactical vests, clutching his bear.

Suddenly, the heavy iron doors of our warehouse shuddered.

A massive explosion ripped through the front entrance, sending dust and debris raining down.

My heart stopped.

Through the smoke, a figure walked in, wearing an emerald green coat.

It was Isabella, flanked by a dozen heavily armed mercenaries.

"Did you really think Rossi's goons could keep me out?" she laughed, her voice dripping with poison.

She held a silenced pistol, aiming it directly at my chest.

"Hand over the bear, you pathetic florist."

I stood up, stepping over my sleeping son to shield him from her view.

I raised the pearl-handled pistol Lorenzo had given me, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

"You killed Matteo," I cried out, tears blurring my vision.

"He was weak, just like you," Isabella sneered, stepping closer.

"Now give me the key to the accounts, or I will shoot the boy first."

She pointed her gun at Leo.

The motherly instinct inside me took over, erasing all my fear.

I pulled the trigger.

The recoil snapped my wrist back, and the gunshot was deafening.

Isabella screamed, dropping her weapon as blood blossomed on her shoulder.

Before her mercenaries could fire back, the back doors of the warehouse blew open.

Lorenzo Rossi stormed in like an angel of death.
