Chapter 2 - The Safe Room

Chaos erupted among the ten syndicate families in the blink of an eye.

Capo Marino shouted a brutal curse, raising his gold-plated revolver.

"She is a Falcone widow, Rossi, kill her before she breeds more traitors!"

Before Marino could even pull the hammer back, Lorenzo’s hand flashed to his waistband.

A gunshot deafened the room, ringing off the gold-leafed ceilings.

Capo Marino dropped his gun, screaming as blood poured from a hole in his shoulder.

"Nobody touches them!" Lorenzo roared, his gun now aimed at the rest of the mob bosses.

He grabbed my arm with his free hand, pulling me and Leo behind his broad back.

"Guards, escort my guests out of the palazzo immediately," he ordered.

Isabella looked at him as if he had lost his mind.

"You are protecting a rat over your own blood allies?" she screeched.

"The wedding is off, Isabella," Lorenzo said coldly.

He turned and practically dragged me and Leo down the western corridor.

We moved fast, winding through a maze of marble halls and hidden doors.

He finally shoved us into a heavily armored study and locked the steel door behind us.

The room was silent, insulated from the madness outside.

Leo hugged his wooden bear, looking up at the mafia boss.

"You have a loud gun, Mister," my son stated plainly.

Lorenzo knelt down again, placing his weapon on the mahogany desk.

"I am sorry I frightened you, little man," he said gently.

He looked up at me, his dark eyes searching my terrified face.

"Matteo Falcone was my brother in arms before his family betrayed mine," Lorenzo revealed softly.

"I didn't know he had a child."
