Chapter 1 - The Glass Airborne

The chandelier above the Grand Azure Resort lobby dripped with thousands of imported crystals, casting fractured prisms of light across the flawless marble floor.

It was a floor that Arthur, a seventy-two-year-old man with gentle eyes and calloused hands, had spent the last hour polishing to a mirror shine.

He didn't have to be here, pushing a heavy mop bucket and wearing a gray janitor's uniform, but Arthur found peace in honest, invisible labor.

Unfortunately, his peaceful morning was about to be shattered by the piercing, screeching voice of Chloe Vance.

Chloe was a notorious local heiress, draped in a custom silk dress and reeking of expensive champagne at ten in the morning.

She was angry because her diamond tennis bracelet had caught on a luggage cart, and she had decided that Arthur was to blame simply because he was standing nearby.

"You incompetent, dusty old fossil!" she shrieked, her voice echoing off the gilded walls and halting every guest in their tracks.

Arthur simply lowered his head, gripping his mop handle, refusing to engage with her drunken rage.

His silence only infuriated her more, driving her to grab a full, sticky mimosa from a passing waiter's tray.

With a wicked gleam in her eyes, she raised the glass high, fully intending to drench the elderly man and ruin his dignity.

But the glass never made it to Arthur's face.

Elias, a twenty-two-year-old rookie security guard on his very first week, lunged forward with lightning speed.

He intercepted her arm mid-swing, his large hand clamping firmly around her delicate wrist to stop the assault.

The sticky orange liquid sloshed violently over the rim, spilling onto Chloe's own expensive designer shoes instead.

Elias knew he was risking his only paycheck, the money he desperately needed to pay his mother's medical bills, but he couldn't stand by and watch an innocent old man be humiliated.

"Ma'am, I am going to have to ask you to step back," Elias said, his voice surprisingly steady despite the adrenaline pounding in his chest.

Chloe gasped, staring at the rookie guard as if a piece of the furniture had just come alive and slapped her.

"Let go of me, you minimum-wage nobody!" she hissed, yanking furiously against his unwavering grip.

The suffocating tension in the lobby was completely off the charts as onlookers pulled out their phones to record the escalating drama.

"Do you have any idea who owns this resort?!" she demanded, her face turning an ugly shade of crimson.

She was so drunk on her own privilege that she failed to notice the soft chime of the private, VIP elevator opening directly behind her.

She failed to notice the sudden, absolute silence that fell over the entire hotel staff.

And she completely failed to notice Julian Vance, the true mastermind and billionaire CEO who actually built the entire enterprise, stepping out onto the marble floor.

Julian’s cold, calculating eyes immediately locked onto the scene, his jaw tightening into a dangerous, sharp line.

Because the fragile man Chloe had just tried to humiliate was not just a random janitor.

That man was Julian's beloved grandfather.
