Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the House

Later that afternoon, I drove back to the house to pack up my mother’s belongings. We were never going to let her spend another night in that toxic, suffocating environment.

The house felt entirely different now. The oppressive, looming shadow of Marcus’s authority had been completely scrubbed away.

I walked into the master bedroom. Marcus’s uniform hung in the closet. His cheap cologne lingered in the air. I grabbed a trash bag and began violently throwing his possessions into it—his boots, his civilian clothes, his watches. I dragged the bags out to the curb and left them for the garbage collectors.

While I was packing my mother’s jewelry, I heard a car pull up in the driveway.

I looked out the window. It was Deputy Holden, the partner who had tried to back Marcus up the night of the raid. He wasn't in uniform. He was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, looking sheepish and terrified.

I walked out onto the front porch, crossing my arms.

“What do you want, Ray?” I asked.

Ray took off his baseball cap, twisting it nervously in his hands. “Admiral Vance. I... I just came to apologize. I didn't know what Marcus was doing to your mother. I swear on my life, I didn't know.”

“You knew he had a temper,” I challenged, staring him down. “You knew the Sheriff covered up his internal affairs complaints.”

“I suspected,” Ray admitted, looking at his boots. “But in this town, if you cross the Sheriff, you lose your job. I have three kids, Evelyn. I was scared.”

“Fear is an explanation, Ray, not an excuse,” I said firmly. “When you put on a badge, you swear an oath to protect the vulnerable, not your own paycheck. You let a monster hide in plain sight because it was convenient for you.”

Ray nodded, tears welling in his eyes. “I know. And I’m resigning tomorrow. I just... I wanted to say I’m sorry. To you, and to your mom.”

I looked at him, seeing the genuine remorse breaking through his cowardice. “Leave the badge on the desk, Ray. And spend some time figuring out what kind of man you actually want your kids to look up to.”
