Chapter 17 - The Command

The salty air of the Pacific Ocean hit my lungs the moment I stepped onto the deck of the USS Ronald Reagan, the massive aircraft carrier that served as my flagship.

The deck crew snapped to attention, saluting sharply as I strode toward the command bridge. The familiar, chaotic symphony of fighter jets launching and radar arrays spinning washed over me, a beautiful, organized chaos that I had missed dearly.

I stepped onto the bridge. The Captain of the ship, a grizzled veteran named Caldwell, offered a sharp salute.

“Admiral Vance on deck!” a sailor barked.

“As you were,” I said, walking over to the massive tactical holotable in the center of the room. “Give me a sit-rep, Captain.”

“Hostile submarine activity detected near the southern straits, Ma'am,” Caldwell reported, handing me a digital tablet. “They are probing our sonar nets, looking for weaknesses.”

I reviewed the data, my mind instantly shifting gears from domestic survival to global strategy. The stakes here were infinitely higher, but the principles were exactly the same: bullies only respect strength, and weakness invites aggression.

“Deploy the hunter-killer squadrons to sector bravo,” I ordered, my voice cutting through the hum of the bridge. “Let’s show them exactly where our lines are drawn. And Captain?”

“Yes, Admiral?”

“Make sure they know we are watching. I want them to feel the pressure before they even think about surfacing.”

“Aye, Admiral,” Caldwell grinned. “Welcome back.”
