Chapter 19 - The Foundation

A year after the trial, I received an encrypted video call on my terminal.
It was my mother. She was sitting in her bright, sunlit kitchen in Texas, a massive smile on her face.
“Evie! I have huge news!” she beamed.
“What is it, Mom?” I asked, leaning back in my command chair.
“I took a portion of the civil settlement money we won from the county,” she explained, her voice buzzing with excitement. “I bought the old police precinct building in town. The one they foreclosed on after the corruption scandal.”
I raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised. “You bought the precinct? Why?”
“I’m converting it,” she said proudly. “I’m turning it into a regional women’s shelter and legal advocacy center for victims of domestic abuse. It’s going to have security, lawyers, and counselors. The very building where Marcus and his buddies used to ignore women like me is now going to be the place that saves them.”
I felt a massive swell of pride tight in my chest. She wasn't just surviving anymore; she was conquering her past and reshaping the future.
“That is the most brilliant, beautiful thing I have ever heard, Mom,” I smiled. “What are you going to call it?”

“The Vance Foundation,” she replied, wiping a happy tear from her eye. “After the strongest woman I know.”
I couldn't help the tears that pricked my own eyes. “I am so incredibly proud of you.”
