Chapter 8 - The Penthouse Fortress

The Sterling penthouse was a masterpiece of modern architecture, suspended in the clouds above Manhattan. Floor-to-ceiling smart glass offered a panoramic view of Central Park, while the interior was adorned in rich velvet, dark oak, and brushed gold.

When the private elevator chimed and the doors parted, Maya’s jaw unhinged. She dropped her stuffed bear on the heated marble floor and ran toward the massive windows.

“Mommy, look! We’re flying!” she squealed, pressing her small hands against the glass.

Elena stepped out cautiously, clutching her faded canvas tote bag like a shield. She felt profoundly out of place. Her frayed teal sweater and worn sneakers were a stark contrast to the absolute luxury surrounding them.

“This is too much, Julian,” Elena said quietly, her voice echoing in the cavernous foyer. “I don't know how to live in a place like this. I don't belong here.”

Julian walked up beside her, gently taking the heavy tote bag from her trembling hands. “You belong exactly where you are safe,” he said, his voice remarkably gentle. “There are five bedrooms. Pick whichever one you want. The kitchen is fully stocked. Tomorrow, a tailor will arrive to fit you for a professional wardrobe suitable for your new title.”

“What am I actually supposed to do?” Elena asked, looking up at him. Up close, the resemblance to David was agonizing. Julian had the same strong jaw, the same dark hair, but his eyes were harder, weathered by the ruthless world he commanded.

“You are going to help me destroy Victor Vance,” Julian said flatly. “David said Victor set up dummy corporations in his name. I need to audit ten years of shadow accounts without Victor’s security team noticing. I can't trust my own board. I can't trust my executives. I can only trust you.”

Elena swallowed hard. The fear was overwhelming, but as she looked at Maya dancing in front of the window, completely oblivious to the danger, a fierce, protective fire ignited in her chest. Victor had taken her husband. He had condemned her daughter to a life of poverty.

“Show me the ledgers,” Elena said, her voice hardening.

A ghost of a smile touched Julian’s lips. He saw the fire in her eyes. David had chosen well. “Follow me, partner.”
