Chapter 14 - The Hospital Room

Three days later, Elena walked through the sterile, highly secured halls of the private medical facility. Two of Julian’s bodyguards nodded respectfully and opened the door to his VIP suite.
Julian was sitting up in bed, looking pale and exhausted, an IV line taped to the back of his hand. His left arm was in a heavy sling. Despite the bruising and the hospital gown, he still looked remarkably handsome, exuding a quiet, undeniable strength.
He looked up as she entered, and his dark eyes instantly softened.
“Elena,” he breathed.
She didn't say a word. She crossed the room, sat on the edge of his mattress, and carefully wrapped her arms around his uninjured side, burying her face in his neck. Julian let out a shaky breath, wrapping his good arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.
“You idiot,” she whispered, crying into his hospital gown. “You stupid, reckless idiot. You could have died.”
“I told you I would protect you,” Julian murmured, resting his chin on the top of her head. “I keep my promises.”
Elena pulled back, framing his face with her hands. She looked deeply into his eyes. “Victor is in jail. The FBI froze all his assets. The board is officially naming you the sole owner of the conglomerate tomorrow.”
“I don't care about the board,” Julian said softly. He reached up, gently wiping a tear from her cheek. “I only care about you. And Maya. How is she?”
“She’s drawing a picture of you in the waiting room,” Elena smiled, a watery laugh escaping her lips. “She colored your suit purple.”
Julian smiled, a genuine, beautiful expression that erased years of coldness from his face. But then, a shadow crossed his features.

“The danger is gone, Elena,” Julian said, his voice dropping. “David’s trust fund has been fully restored in Maya’s name. You have over two hundred million dollars in your account. You are completely independent. You don't have to stay in the penthouse. You don't have to pretend to be my consultant anymore. You’re free.”
Elena stared at him, her heart sinking. He was giving her an out. He thought she only stayed because she had to.
