Chapter 15 - The Choice

Elena slowly pulled her hands away from his face. She stood up, smoothing the front of her simple, elegant dress.

“You think I stayed because of the money?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

“I think you stayed because you had no other choice,” Julian replied, looking away, staring at the blank hospital wall. “I dragged you into a war zone, Elena. I nearly got you and Maya killed. You deserve a quiet, safe life. Not the chaos of my world.”

“You didn't drag me anywhere, Julian. I chose to help you find the proof. I chose to stand by you.”

“Because of David,” Julian said bitterly. “Because you felt a loyalty to my brother.”

Elena stepped back, a mixture of anger and profound sadness bubbling in her chest. “David was a good man. But David has been gone for three years. I mourned him. I survived him. The man who shielded my body with his own, the man who bled on the marble floor so my daughter could escape… that wasn't David. That was you.”

Julian’s head snapped back to her, his dark eyes wide with shock.

“I don't want a quiet life if you aren't in it,” Elena confessed, her voice breaking. “I don't care about the two hundred million dollars. I care about the man who bought my daughter a stuffed bear and stayed up until 3:00 AM reading ledgers with me.”

Julian struggled to sit forward, ignoring the sharp pain in his chest. “Elena…”

“I love you, Julian,” she said, the absolute truth of it ringing clear in the silent hospital room. “Not out of obligation. Not out of gratitude. Just you.”

Julian reached out his good arm, grabbing her wrist and pulling her back down onto the edge of the bed. He didn't hesitate. He pulled her down and captured her lips in a desperate, bruising kiss. It was a collision of relief, passion, and years of suppressed loneliness finally breaking open.

Elena kissed him back fiercely, her fingers tangling in his dark hair, being careful not to press on his injured shoulder.

When they finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, Julian rested his forehead against hers.

“Stay with me,” he pleaded, his voice thick with emotion. “Marry me, Elena. Let me be a father to Maya. Let me build a life with you that has nothing to do with the empire, and everything to do with us.”

Elena smiled, a brilliant, radiant expression. “Yes. I will.”
