Chapter 12 - Blood on the Marble

“You lost the right to call yourself a businessman when you murdered my brother,” Julian spat, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Victor’s smile vanished. The mask slipped, revealing the desperate, greedy monster beneath. “David was weak. He wanted to give the wealth away to charities and unions. He didn't have the stomach to rule this empire. I did what had to be done to protect the company!”

“You did it to line your own pockets!” Julian yelled back.

“Does it matter?” Victor sneered. “You don't have the proof, Julian. And once I eliminate the widow and the brat, David’s legacy dies permanently. Kill them!”

The three mercenaries raised their weapons.

Julian didn't hesitate. He wasn't just a CEO; he was a man protecting his family. He fired twice, dropping the mercenary closest to Victor.

The hallway erupted in deafening gunfire.

Julian tackled Elena to the marble floor, covering her and Maya as bullets shattered the priceless vases and tore through the drywall above them. The deafening noise made Maya scream in absolute terror, burying her face in Elena’s chest.

Julian fired back blindly around the corner, forcing Victor and his men to take cover behind the grand piano in the foyer.

“The stairwell door is open!” Julian shouted over the gunfire, shoving Elena toward the heavy steel door. “Go! Get to the roof!”

“I’m not leaving you!” Elena screamed, grabbing his jacket.

“Go!” Julian roared, his eyes blazing with a fierce, unconditional love that hit Elena like a physical blow. He wasn't acting out of guilt anymore. He was acting out of love.

Elena scrambled through the heavy steel door, clutching her crying daughter. As the door swung shut behind her, she heard Victor shout an order.

Then, she heard the sickening thud of a bullet tearing through flesh, followed by Julian’s sharp, agonizing grunt of pain.

“Julian!” Elena screamed, pounding on the steel door as it locked automatically behind her. She was trapped in the stairwell. He was trapped in the penthouse.

“Run, Elena!” Julian’s voice echoed through the thick steel, weak but desperate.

Tears streaming down her face, Elena turned and ran up the concrete stairs, praying to a God she hoped was finally listening.
