Chapter 7 - The Medical Emergency

Winter blanketed the Rhode Island estate in thick, pristine snow. The family was preparing for their first real Christmas together. Clara had decorated a massive, twelve-foot tree in the grand hall, and the smell of pine and baking cookies filled the air.
But tragedy strikes when you are most comfortable.
Two weeks before Christmas, Leo, the brother Clara had donated a kidney to, collapsed on the grand staircase.
Clara’s screams echoed through the mansion. Julian sprinted from his office, finding Clara clutching the boy’s pale, unconscious body.
They rushed him to Massachusetts General Hospital—the very place Clara had nursed Julian back to health months ago. The pediatric nephrologist, Dr. Aris, delivered the devastating news.
“His remaining kidney is failing, Mrs. Vance,” the doctor said grimly. “The anti-rejection medications have stopped working. He needs another transplant immediately, or he won't survive the month. And since you’ve already donated, you cannot be a donor again.”
Clara fell to her knees in the hospital hallway, the world crashing down around her. She had fought so hard, sacrificed so much, and now she was going to lose him anyway.
Julian pulled her up, holding her tightly against his chest. “We will fix this,” Julian vowed, his eyes blazing with absolute resolve. “I will buy him a kidney. I will build him a new one. I will not let him die.”
Julian utilized every ounce of his immense wealth and power. He hired a team of data scientists to hack into international donor registries, looking for a match. He offered a massive financial reward. But Leo’s blood type and tissue markers were incredibly rare.
Days turned into a week. Leo grew weaker, hooked up to dialysis machines, his small body failing.
Clara stopped eating, refusing to leave his bedside, just as she had done for Julian.
On the eighth day, Julian walked into the hospital room, looking incredibly pale but wearing a faint smile.
“I found a match,” Julian said quietly.
Clara shot up from the chair. “Who? Where are they?”
Julian unbuttoned his crisp white shirt, revealing his chest. “It’s me, Clara. I forced the doctors to run my labs. I’m a perfect match.”

Clara gasped, covering her mouth. “Julian… no. You’re the CEO. The surgery is dangerous. You can't—”
“He is my son,” Julian interrupted, his voice thick with emotion. He walked over, taking Clara’s face in his hands. “I told you on our wedding night. I love them as I love you. I am going to save our boy.”
