Chapter 1 - The Virgin Mother’s Secret

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat, his eyes wide as the delicate silk nightgown pooled around Clara’s ankles. He had braced himself for the physical evidence of her past—the stretch marks of three pregnancies, the loose skin of a woman who had given birth multiple times, the worn body of a mother who had sacrificed everything for her illegitimate children. He had prepared his heart to kiss every single flaw, to show her that her past did not diminish her beauty.

But there were no stretch marks.

There was no loose skin.

Clara’s abdomen was perfectly flat, her skin smooth and flawless like polished alabaster. She bore absolutely no physical signs of ever having carried a single child, let alone three.

Instead, Julian’s eyes were drawn to a massive, jagged surgical scar that ran along her left side, curving just below her ribs—the unmistakable mark of a major organ extraction.

Julian’s mind raced, trying to reconcile the rumors with the undeniable truth standing before him. He took a trembling step forward. “Clara…” he whispered, his voice thick with confusion. “Your body… you’ve never been pregnant.”

Clara instinctively crossed her arms over her chest, her face flushing crimson, tears welling in her large, terrified eyes. She looked down, ashamed. “I’m sorry,” she choked out. “I should have told you. I was just so scared you wouldn’t understand.”

“Understand what?” Julian asked softly, reaching out to gently pull her hands away from her body. He traced the edge of the surgical scar with a feather-light touch. “Clara, whose children are Tommy, Leo, and Maya?”

A sob tore through Clara’s throat. She collapsed onto the edge of the massive canopy bed, burying her face in her hands.

“They aren’t my children, Julian,” she wept, her shoulders shaking violently. “They are my younger siblings.”

The revelation hit Julian like a freight train. The rumors, the vicious gossip from the staff, the whispers of her being a "loose woman"—it was all a lie.

Clara looked up, her tear-streaked face illuminated by the soft light of the bedside lamps. “Five years ago, my parents were killed in a horrific car crash in West Virginia. I was nineteen. Tommy was six, Leo was four, and Maya was just a baby. Our aunt and uncle took control of the estate, stole the life insurance money, and threatened to put my siblings into the foster care system, where they would be separated forever.”

Julian sank to his knees in front of her, grasping her trembling hands. “My god, Clara. What did you do?”

“I ran,” she whispered. “I took them in the middle of the night. I found a retired nurse in a neighboring state who agreed to board them and care for them in secret, but it costs almost everything I make. I dropped out of college. I scrubbed floors. I took the job here because the pay was high enough to keep them safe.”

“And the scar?” Julian asked, his voice breaking.

“Leo got sick two years ago,” Clara said, touching her side. “His kidneys were failing. I was a match. I donated my kidney to him. I couldn't afford the time off to recover properly, so I just kept working. The staff here... they saw me sending money, buying children's clothes. They assumed the worst. I let them believe it because a 'loose woman' is ignored. A runaway kidnapping her own siblings would be investigated.”

Julian looked at the woman he had just married. She wasn't a damaged woman with a reckless past. She was a fiercely loyal, terrifyingly brave guardian who had sacrificed her education, her body, and her reputation to keep her family together.

He leaned forward, pressing a reverent kiss to her surgical scar, and then to her lips. “You are the most incredible woman I have ever met,” Julian vowed. “And tomorrow, we are bringing our family home.”
