Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

Life settled into a beautiful rhythm. Tommy joined the soccer team, Leo was excelling in science, and little Maya had Julian wrapped completely around her finger. Julian, who had never known a loving family, thrived in the chaotic, joyful noise of the mansion.
But Clara’s past in West Virginia wasn't done with her.
Clara’s aunt and uncle—the ones who had stolen her parents' money and forced her to run—saw Julian and Clara on the cover of Forbes magazine.
Greed is a powerful motivator.
One rainy evening, the front gates of the estate buzzed. The security guard called the main house. “Mr. Vance, there are two people here claiming to be Clara’s legal guardians. They have court documents.”
Julian’s blood ran cold. He looked at Clara, whose face had completely drained of color.
“Let them in,” Julian ordered. “Send them to my study.”
Aunt Martha and Uncle Dale walked into the opulent mansion, their eyes wide with avarice, tracking mud onto the Persian rugs.
“Well, well,” Dale sneered, looking Clara up and down. “Looks like the little runaway hit the jackpot. We’re here for the kids, Clara. We have a judge’s order from West Virginia stating we are their legal foster parents.”
“You abused them!” Clara shouted, her maternal instincts flaring. “You locked Tommy in a closet! You stole our money!”
“Prove it,” Martha smirked. “Unless your billionaire husband wants a messy, public custody battle in court, you’re going to pay us ten million dollars right now. Or we take the brats back with us today.”
Julian sat behind his desk, steepling his fingers. He looked at the two despicable humans trying to extort his wife.
“You seem to misunderstand how power works, Dale,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly register. “I don't fight custody battles in court. I ruin lives.”
Julian pressed a button on his desk. The doors opened, and two men in dark suits walked in.
“These are federal agents,” Julian said smoothly. “I had my private investigators look into your finances the day Clara told me about you. It turns out, embezzling life insurance money across state lines is a federal offense. As is tax evasion.”
Dale and Martha’s smug smiles vanished instantly.
“You are going to sign full legal guardianship of those children over to Clara and me right now,” Julian commanded, sliding a document across the desk. “If you refuse, these agents will arrest you, and I will ensure you spend the rest of your miserable lives in a federal penitentiary.”

Trembling, Dale picked up the pen and signed.
As they were escorted out in handcuffs—Julian had them arrested for the tax evasion anyway—Clara collapsed into Julian’s arms, weeping with relief. The ghosts of her past were finally dead.
