Chapter 5 - The Downward Spiral

I returned to Denver as a ghost haunting my own corporate empire.
The acquisition deal I had sacrificed my marriage for ultimately collapsed because I missed three critical deadlines.
My shareholders were furious, and the board of directors called an emergency meeting to discuss my fitness to lead the Whitaker Lodging Group.
I sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking at the angry faces of my investors, and realized I felt absolutely nothing for them.
They demanded explanations for my absence and my negligence, threatening to vote for my immediate removal as CEO.
Instead of fighting for the company I had built from the ground up, I simply nodded and agreed with their assessment.
I stood up, adjusted my tie, and formally submitted my resignation right there in the boardroom.
