Chapter 8 - THE SMOKING GUN

The turning point of the entire trial happened on the fourth day.

The prosecutor officially entered the handwritten ledger I had found at the lake cabin into evidence.

Marcus's face turned the color of pale ash when he saw the small, battered notebook projected on the large screen.

He had completely forgotten where he had hidden it, assuming it was safe forever.

The forensic handwriting expert confidently testified that the writing was a one-hundred-percent match to Marcus’s handwriting.

The ledger detailed exact dates, massive dollar amounts, and the offshore account numbers that perfectly matched the missing corporate funds.

It completely destroyed the defense's argument that Sylvia had orchestrated the fraud alone.

Then, Sylvia was finally called to the witness stand.

She sobbed uncontrollably as she detailed exactly how Marcus had manipulated her into signing the dummy corporation papers.

"He told me it was just a temporary tax shelter!" she cried to the horrified jury.

"He said we needed the money to start a new life together!"

Marcus suddenly lost all remaining control of his temper.

He violently slammed his fists onto the heavy wooden defense table, shocking the entire courtroom.

"You stupid, lying traitor!" Marcus screamed at Sylvia at the top of his lungs.

"I gave you everything, and you ruined it!"

The judge banged his gavel furiously, ordering the heavily armed bailiffs to immediately restrain the defendant.

Marcus was roughly pushed back into his chair, breathing heavily like a cornered, rabid animal.

His violent outburst had just shown the jury the true, terrifying monster hiding behind the expensive tailored suit.

The defense attorney buried his face in his hands, knowing the trial was completely and utterly lost.

The jury did not even need to deliberate for long.

The absolute truth was undeniable.
