Chapter 4 - THE LAKE CABIN

I left the city before the morning sun even kissed the towering glass skyscrapers.

I drove three hours north to the secluded lake cabin my grandmother had left me.

It was the only place in the world where I felt truly safe from Marcus's toxic influence.

The crisp morning air smelled of pine needles and damp earth as I unlocked the rustic wooden door.

The cabin looked exactly as I had left it, but a deep sense of unease settled in my stomach.

Marcus had secretly leveraged this property to secure a massive illegal loan.

He wouldn't have done that unless he had a specific reason to tie the fraud directly to my name.

I began systematically tearing the cabin apart, looking for anything he might have hidden here.

I checked behind the dusty oil paintings, under the heavy oak floorboards, and inside the vintage grandfather clock.

After two hours of frantic searching, I noticed the heavy stone fireplace.

One of the large gray stones near the base looked slightly misaligned.

I grabbed a metal fire poker and pried the heavy stone loose.

Behind it was a dark, hollowed-out cavity.

I reached my hand inside and pulled out a small, heavy steel lockbox.

My hands trembled as I used a heavy hammer from the shed to smash the cheap padlock.

Inside the box were three pristine, shrink-wrapped burner phones and a handwritten ledger.

I opened the ledger and recognized Marcus’s messy handwriting immediately.

It was a detailed list of every single politician and corporate regulator he had bribed over the past five years.

He had hidden his ultimate insurance policy inside my personal property.

If the FBI had raided the cabin without my knowledge, I would have looked like the mastermind holding the evidence.

I carefully placed the ledger and the phones into a plastic bag.

I had just found the silver bullet that would put him away for decades.
