Chapter 2 - THE INTERROGATION

I spent the next four hours sitting in a sterile, brightly lit conference room at the local FBI field office.
Agent Miller sat across from me, reviewing the massive stack of documents I had smuggled out of our penthouse.
"You did an incredibly thorough job," Miller said, looking up with genuine respect.
"Most forensic accountants would take six months to trace these dummy corporations."
I took a slow sip of the terrible black coffee he had offered me.
"When you spend five years married to a narcissist, you learn how to read between the lines."
"Marcus thought I was too busy planning charity galas to notice the discrepancies in our joint tax returns."
"But when I saw the second mortgage taken out on my late grandmother's lake cabin, I stopped ignoring the red flags."
Miller pulled out a glossy photograph of Sylvia and slid it across the metal table.
"Sylvia is currently in holding room B, crying hysterically and offering to wear a wire."
"She claims Marcus physically threatened her to keep her quiet."
I actually laughed out loud at the sheer absurdity of the lie.
"Sylvia has been sleeping with my husband for two years."
"They took a romantic vacation to St. Barts using the exact funds they stole from the corporate pension plan."
Miller nodded, jotting down a quick note in his leather binder.
"We already pulled the flight manifests, and you are entirely correct."
"The board of directors just held an emergency midnight vote."
"Marcus has been officially terminated as CEO, effective immediately."
A massive weight lifted off my shoulders, but the war was far from over.
I knew Marcus had expensive defense lawyers on retainer, and they would try to destroy my credibility.
I stood up and smoothed the wrinkles from my skirt.
"I need to go home and pack my belongings before his legal team tries to lock me out of the penthouse."
Miller handed me his business card.

"Call me if he tries to contact you."
"Cornered animals are the most dangerous kind."
