Chapter 5 - THE DESPERATE MISTRESS

I drove straight to the local police precinct in the nearby rural town.
I wanted to hand the evidence over to a neutral party and have it formally logged into the federal chain of custody.
As I walked out of the police station, a sleek black sports car completely blocked my vehicle in the parking lot.
Sylvia stepped out of the driver's side, wearing oversized sunglasses and a frantic expression.
"How did you know I was here?" I demanded, keeping a safe distance from her.
"I paid a private investigator to track your license plate," she admitted, her voice shaking with panic.
She looked entirely different from the smug, arrogant woman who had kicked my chair at the restaurant.
Her perfect hair was messy, and her hands were violently trembling.
"They froze all of my personal bank accounts this morning."
"I cannot even buy groceries, and my landlord is threatening to evict me."
I stared at her, feeling absolutely zero pity for the woman who helped destroy my life.
"You should have thought about the consequences before you stole millions of dollars, Sylvia."
She lunged forward, grabbing my arm with desperate strength.
"You have to tell the FBI that Marcus forced me to do it!"
"He promised me we were going to get married and move to Europe!"
I pulled my arm away from her frantic grip.
"He promised me the exact same thing when we got married five years ago."
"He uses people until they are empty, and then he throws them away."
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and hit the record button.
"If you want a plea deal, Sylvia, you need to go to the federal prosecutor and testify against him."
"I am not going to save you."
May you like
She collapsed against the hood of her sports car, sobbing loudly into her hands.
I got into my car and drove away, leaving her to face the brutal reality of her own choices.
