Chapter 3 - Fire in the Nerves

The third session was brutal. Claire didn't hold back. She understood the stakes now; it wasn't just about paying for Leo's surgery, it was about survival.
She used a specialized scrape tool, a piece of medical-grade steel, to drag across the thickest part of the blast scar on Sebastian's lumbar spine.
Sebastian gripped the arms of his wheelchair, a guttural groan ripping from his throat. Sweat soaked his hair, dripping down his neck.
"Don't stop," he ground out, his knuckles turning white.
"It's going to bruise," Claire warned, though she didn't lessen the pressure. "I'm intentionally causing micro-trauma to the dead tissue to force your body to send blood and oxygen to the area. It's waking up the nervous system."
"Do it," he commanded.
Suddenly, Sebastian’s right leg jerked violently. Not just a toe this time, but the entire calf muscle spasmed. He let out a sharp cry—not of pain, but of shock. He reached down, his massive hand gripping his own thigh.
"I felt that," he whispered, staring at his leg. "Claire... I felt the heat of your hand all the way down to my knee."
Claire stepped back, her own breathing ragged. "The neural pathways are opening. The spinal cord wasn't severed, it was just in shock. A twenty-year shock."

Sebastian looked up at her, the ruthless mob boss completely stripped away. In his eyes, she saw a terrifying, undeniable gratitude. "You're a witch," he breathed.
"Just a mother with a lot of motivation," she replied, packing her tools. "Rest tomorrow. You'll feel like you were hit by a truck."
