Chapter 4 - The InterrogationDante handed the sleeping boy to a severe-looking nanny who quickly disappeared up the grand staircase.

He turned his icy gaze back to Clara.

“Follow me,” he commanded, walking down a long corridor lined with priceless art.

Clara followed him into a sprawling, dark-paneled study that smelled of expensive scotch and old books.

He closed the heavy doors, plunging the room into total isolation.

“Sit,” he said, pointing to a leather armchair in front of his massive mahogany desk.

Clara remained standing, her chin lifted in a stubborn display of defiance.

“I want to go home, Mr. Russo.”

Dante poured himself a glass of amber liquid, his movements slow and deliberate.

“That is not going to happen anytime soon, Clara.”

He walked around the desk and leaned against the edge, crossing his arms.

“My son’s personal bodyguard was paid two million dollars to abandon him at the park today.”

“A rival family planned to kidnap him to force my hand in a territorial dispute.”

Clara shook her head, feeling sick to her stomach.

“I am just a nurse, I have nothing to do with your mafia wars!”

“You interfered,” Dante corrected, his voice dangerously low.

“By saving my son, you ruined their plan.”

“They will pull the transit security footage, find your face, and track you down to make an example of you.”

Clara sank into the leather chair, her legs finally giving out as the reality crashed over her.

She had traded one night of kindness for a death sentence.

“So what happens to me now?” she whispered, tears stinging her eyes.

Dante stared at her, an unreadable shadow passing through his striking blue eyes.

“Now, you stay here under my protection until I slaughter every single man involved.”
